British submariners have played a key role in the UK's naval history. They have destroyed enemy ships, disrupted naval battles, and hunted Russian spy ships for the UK Navy.
The Royal Submarine Force was involved in many naval battles throughout the 20th century. This proved that they were more than just a nuisance. A submarine was actually one of the most valuable weapons in the world during World War II. It destroyed more German ships than any other Allied vessel.
This was also the first occasion that a British submariner had been awarded a Victoria Cross. It was given to Lieutenant Commander Malcolm David Wanklyn who commanded HMS Upholder during the war in the Mediterranean. His men achieved a remarkable record for victory by sinking enemy ships, securing tens of thousands of tonnes.
For submariners, it was a dangerous job, but one that they loved. They could be stationed on patrol for up six months.

They found a home in the bowels and often lived there. Their galley served four meals a day - all freshly cooked by the navy chefs.
They lived a hard life. They were susceptible to disease due to the noxious engine exhausts.
Red Flu was the first of these diseases, and it claimed many lives. The disease spread quickly to the ship, and nearly everyone died.
Another deadly disease was the MRSA, which caused an infection in the bloodstream of the crew. This reduced their immune system, making it more difficult for them to die.
During the Falklands War HMS Conqueror was attacked by three submarines, HMS Splendid, HMS Splendid, and HMS Spartan, but they were not able to engage the Task Group 79.1 Argentine Navy carriers.

They also played an important part in the Cold War, preying on enemy trade. They destroyed a number Turkish and Soviet merchant vessels, while HMS Swiftsure, a submarine designed in Barrow-in-Furness, sank a German cruiser at the North Sea.
The Royal Navy, UK's submarine fleet, still plays an essential role in the UK’s national security. They are the foundation of a Continuously At Sea Deterrent. That is, one submarine is always available to launch nuclear missiles at any moment.
