The master's degree is in military history and focuses on historical research of a particular area of military history. The type of dissertation the student chooses depends on the field of study. It can either be a research article or a thesis. Students take Introduction to Research in Military History in their first year. This course combines reading of classic texts about military history with discussion of research strategies. The first semester focuses on researching and writing a paper which will eventually become a master's dissertation or thesis. In the fall semester, students revise and complete their MA thesis or dissertation.
U.S. Army Nurse Corps - Women
Congress created the Army Nurse Corps in 1901. It was the first military career for women. 41 nurses had been employed by the Army General Hospital, San Francisco Presidio in 1902. During 1906's earthquake and fire, Dora E. Thompson, the hospital’s chief nurse, was in charge of the nursing staff.
Firsts for U.S. women in the military
The U.S. military has had a history of women making waves for decades. September 11th marked a major turning point in military women's lives. As a result of the war on terror, women were quickly recruited to and promoted into leadership roles. Many important leadership positions were made possible by women, such as Col. Linda McTague becoming the first female commander in an Air Force fighter group. In the same year Sgt. Tiffany McTague became Army Ranger's first female.
